history

The Company was founded by Sidney & Alec Newland in 1925. Situated in Wood Green their combined trades as Plumber and Carpenter allowed them to initially work for the Waterboard.

They employed 25 men most of whom could get to site by motor-bike, using their sidecars to transport materials.

Having established themselves as Main Contractors they then diversified into property development. Many properties in Potters Bar and Brookmans Park were designed and built by Newland Brothers!

Sidney’s sons, Keith & Trevor, continued the family tradition by setting up an office and yard in 1961, at St Vincent’s Way, Potters Bar.

Initial contracts included building sub-stations for the E.E.B. and small projects for the Local Authorities.

Next day deliveries were far from the norm in those days so the yard was used for materials storage. Once a week large deliveries of plaster, cement, timber etc. would be made which would subsequently be ferried out to sites by our lorries.

Work stopped more frequently in the snowy winters of the past, but then our men were employed by the local councils to clear the snow from paths and roads.

The third generation of Newlands joined the business in 1987, Paul was born in the house next to the yard, so was practically born to building! Andrew meanwhile spent every summer holiday doing the jobs that nobody else on site wanted to do – such as loft insulation.

Paul and Andrew are now firmly ensconced in Newland Construction continuing to deliver the 75 years of building knowledge and expertise.
